What’s up with gendered/gender-free calling?

An interest in gender neutral language has been growing in the contra dance community for a few years now. The typical gender-free terms are ‘larks and ravens. It is odd to get used to, and not everybody likes it — just like not everybody likes the traditional gents and ladies. In contra dancing there is usually a different caller at every dance, unlike square dancing where the caller usually stays the same. What language is used at our dances depends on the callers. Some prefer one method, some the other. We have added that information to our website so that dancers with a preference can decide which dances they wish to attend.
